THE BUSHAYS

DAUGHTERS OF A CERTAIN RAINBOW inquires into social parameters that have defined what it means to be Black and to be a woman, and how these intersecting forces have shaped the identity, creativity, and the intricate relationships between generations of black women and girls, mothers and daughters.

WATCH A BLACK GIRL LONG ENOUGH

Daughters of a Certain Rainbow is an exploration of the complex intersections of race, gender, identity, and relationships, told through the lived experiences of Black mothers and daughters. This project delves into the ways Black women navigate the world, pass down wisdom, and use creativity as a powerful tool for self-expression and resilience.

Key Themes:

Resilience and Strength

  • Examining how Black women and girls assert their agency and power while navigating societal challenges.

  • Unpacking the impact of stereotypes—such as the "strong Black woman" trope—on emotional vulnerability and relationships.

Intergenerational Connections

  • Highlighting the deep bonds between mothers and daughters and the wisdom passed through generations.

  • Exploring how shared histories of joy, pain, and triumph shape familial relationships and identity.

Creativity and Identity

  • Investigating the role of race and gender in shaping self-expression, artistry, and individuality.

  • Celebrating how Black women use creativity—through art, fashion, poetry, and storytelling—to reclaim their narratives and define themselves on their own terms.

Through this project, Daughters of a Certain Rainbow offers a space to witness and honor the complexity, beauty, and strength of Black womanhood across generations.
